Faculty Profile

Al Case, CPA

Al has a BS in Accounting, minor in Japanese, and a MAcc with emphasis in tax.

After graduating Al worked for Deloitte in San Jose, California for a couple of years in various tax areas (mostly corporate tax) before moving into industry. After Deloitte he was in the tax departments of two multi-billion dollar high-tech companies for about six years. His last position before joining the faculty at SOU was International Tax Manager at SGI (Silicon Graphics).

In 2000 he and his family moved to Ashland to put a bigger emphasis on life in the infamous work/LIFE balance equation. He stayed on at SGI as a part-time telecommuter until September of 2001 when he began teaching at SOU.

His hobbies have included baseball, reading, mountain biking, photography, hiking, and studying Japanese. From his days growing up near the Oakland Coliseum, he acquired a collection of over 10,000 autographed baseball cards and other items.

Al can also get by in spoken and written Japanese having lived in Japan for a couple of years in the late 1980s and for a year in 2009-2010. His favorite job to date (not counting teaching at SOU of course) was when he was a tour guide, providing tours in Japanese to Japanese tourists visiting San Francisco and the surrounding areas in the early 1990s.

On his sabbatical he taught for Waseda University, University of Maryland University College Asia, Zhengzhou University of Light Industry (in Henan, China), and he was the Resident Director for Oregon University System (student exchange program between Japanese and Oregon Universities). Al has taught courses in seven different countries.
